my hypothesis is that the bolt latch assembly is bent and causing the latch to not engage properly. if i put my hand on the inside of the receiver and apply pressure to the latch assembly, the latch will then engage and hold the bolt open. The Field Service Manual doesn't cover broken pins in the "common problems" section. That said, MGW has Auto-5 firing pins for $87.25! However, if you go to their "Clearance" page, you can get the same part for $29.

I had no installation problems, and the fit was the same as before.
